-1 101 Z As part of the major building programme initiated by Athens' great statesman, Pericles, a new temple to Athena was constructed on the Acropolis. This was the Parthenon, which was to become one of the chief glories of Athens. It was built and decorated under the supervision of the great sculptor Pheidias, who himself made the huge statue of Athena in gold and ivory for the interior and embellished the exterior with relief carvings (later known as the Elgin marbles).
